Poker deception is a
large subject, but in this small introduction to the domain of poker deception,
let's look at two concepts that beginners should learn to master: bluffing and
slowplaying. Playing poker is a lot like being a spy, the more skilled you are
at misleading others, the more successful you'll become.
Bluffing
Although popular belief may say different, bluffing is not of much use in
low-limit games such as those less than $2-$2. Rarely do people playing
low-limit games stop without going all the way to the showdown. Therefore, there
is little point in attempting to get people to drop out by scaring them. Save
bluffing for bigger events and high-limit games.
When playing high-limit games, the best time to bluff is when you "represent"
something and there are only one or two opponents in the pot. Two examples are:
betting at the flop when you have a high card on the board "representing" a
pair; or raising when a flush is possible "representing" a flush. There is a
great deal of in-depth strategy to the art of bluffing at the poker table, so
start small and gain confidence and skill as you enjoy each success.

Slowplaying
Slowplaying is the art of deceiving your opponents into thinking you have a
less strong hand than you actually do. Let’s say you hold a pair of kings.
The flop shows another king and a pair of 3's. That means you've flopped a
full house! It's not likely someone else will beat your great hand, so there
is little motivation to scare people out of the pot. Instead, you should
wait until the turn or even the river to fill the pot with bets and raises.
You'll take maximum advantage of your especially great hand this way.
There are two basic conditions for when you should slowplay:
1. You hold a killer hand and there's virtually no chance of someone else
drawing out on you.
2. You will get action only when some of the cards that come out do improve
the other player's hands but when those cards are still not great enough to
beat what you already have.
